Ingredients

  • 1 citron (Etrog)
  • 60 cloves

Method

Follow the steps in order for the best result.

  1. Begin by thoroughly washing the citron under cool water to remove any dirt or residue. Pat it completely dry with a clean towel.
  2. Using a small, sturdy tool such as a crochet needle or a thin skewer, carefully pierce the skin of the citron. Insert a single clove into the hole you've created, pushing it in firmly.
  3. Starting at the top of the citron, methodically work your way around the entire fruit, inserting cloves close together in a uniform pattern. Ensure that the cloves are securely embedded in the citron's skin. This process can be time-consuming, so feel free to do it while watching television or listening to music.
  4. Once the citron is completely covered with cloves, place it in a warm, well-ventilated area to dry. As it dries, the citron will gradually shrink, causing the cloves to tighten and become more securely attached. This drying process also intensifies the fragrance of the cloves and citron.
  5. Allow the pomander to dry completely. Once dried, you'll have a beautifully fragrant and long-lasting air freshener, perfect for use as besamim for havdalah or to naturally scent any room.
