Follow the steps in order for the best result.
Begin by activating the yeast. In a bowl, dissolve the yeast, sugar, and salt in warm water. Allow this mixture to stand for approximately 5 minutes, or until a foamy layer forms on top.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, and shredded cheddar cheese.
Pour the yeast mixture into the flour and cheese mixture. Using an electric mixer on low speed, blend until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Using kitchen shears dipped in flour (or a floured dough slicer), divide the dough into 32 equal pieces.
Shape each piece into a small ball.
On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into a rope approximately 14 inches in length.
