Ingredients

Localized ingredient list prepared for quick scanning.

  • 1 lb ground turkey (thawed)
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper (to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon seasoning salt (to taste)
  • 1 medium onion (diced)
  • 2 - 3 cups water (warm)

Method

Follow the steps in order for the best result.

  1. In a medium-sized bowl, thoroughly combine the ground turkey, black pepper, and seasoning salt.
  2. Take a flat baking pan (like a cookie sheet with raised edges) and evenly spread the seasoned ground turkey across the entire surface.
  3. Employ a spatula, rolling pin, or a similar tool to ensure the meat is uniformly flattened and spread.
  4. Create portion-sized markings by gently pressing a knife or pizza cutter into the meat. (For example, make 3 x 3 lines to yield 16 one-ounce portions).
  5. Put the pan with the prepared meat into the freezer and freeze completely.
  6. Once frozen, break the meat apart into individual pieces.
  7. If you aren't cooking all the meat at once, wrap the extra portions in freezer paper to prevent sticking and store them in the freezer.
  8. In a preheated skillet, cook the diced onion until it develops some color. (optional). Season with black pepper and seasoning salt to your liking while browning the onions.
  9. Add enough warm water to barely cover the onions; bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  10. Once the onions and water are simmering, carefully place the frozen seasoned turkey pieces on top, adding more water as needed to prevent sticking or burning.
  11. Simmer until the bottom of the meat is browned, then flip the pieces to cook the other side.
  12. Check the internal temperature of the meat to ensure it is fully cooked and safe to eat.
  13. When fully cooked, serve the turkey "steaks" topped with the sautéed onions.
  14. Optionally, place the meat on rolls, biscuits, or other small bread for a sandwich-style meal.
